008004 capacitors are 150 times more expensive than gold
« on: January 04, 2022, 10:40:13 am »
The following argument is philosophical:
In the past, a lot of effort was made to create gold, of course that didn’t work. But now you can transfer cheap material into something that is 150x more expensive than gold. Namely MLCC capacitors in size 008004. The size is just 0.25 x 0.125 x 0.125mm, the weight is 16 micrograms and the price is about $0.1 per piece.
That makes $6000 per gram which is 150 times more expensive than gold. Moreover, a cube of 1cm3 built from these capacitors costs $25000.
(If I've made a mistake, I'd like to hear about it.)

Presumably they’re much cheaper if you buy enough of them to make up a couple of grams.
0201 0.1uF caps at digikey start out at about $0.10 each for one, but drop to $0.0025 or so if you buy a full reel of 15000 for about 37.50….

1) Buying in bulk and direct from the manufacturer is much cheaper.
2) Most of the cost is in the manufacturing, rather than materials.
3) Commercial software costs more than gold. The cost per mass is infinite.

I don't know. By Shannon's information theory, you could attribute some energy for the information stored in the bits you receive, and then you can apply Einstein's mass-energy equivalence to find non-zero mass, making the cost non-infinite.

But pretty expensive, still! If you receive the software on a physical disk or USB stick, or get printed manuals, then it's a bargain, maybe in the same order of magnitude to gold.

Is that the full reel price per piece, or a small quantity of cut tape?

EDIT: That is reel pricing, and $0.10 is on the low end, I suppose these are so small it's past "smaller=cheaper" and more for black magic microwave stuff or whatever.

Me too. One post and a ridiculous comparison. More like a Troll. But let's see.
