Teardown and power testing of a DealExtreme 5V phone charger
« on: March 08, 2016, 12:04:09 pm »

This one probably takes the cake for being the most user-dangerous 5V power supply yet. I haven't come across something this dangerous before. Most of these kinds of PSUs at least are designed badly just on the inside and the case still *kinda* protects you. But this one can be knocked open with just a medium force nudge; which is made extra easy by the protruding design. And this directly exposes badly soldered mains connections.

And of course it's rated 5V/1A but it won't actually supply more than 500mA (or 650ish at just over 3V output)

Hope you like my teardowns :)

It is bad, but not the worst one.

I have checked about 70 chargers with performance test and tear down. Many Chinese models are bad: http://lygte-info.dk/info/ChargerIndex%20UK.html
