Solar at Sea

Hello, im jerryhopper from the netherlands...

There is a new technology emerging...  Solar at Sea.
Since november 2019 there is a test setup of this in the north-sea.   all presented product images (2!) look awefully slick.
And so do all the articles you will find online.  Recently, some fishermen approached the test-setup of these solar-at-sea panels, and made some pictures.

These pictures show horrible pollution on the solar-panels - which are unlikely to generate 10% more than solarpanels on land.

I was wondering if EEVblog could shine a light on these amount of pollution on solarpanels.

This project seems like another solaroad, waiting to happen.  As Oceans of Energy predicts to generate loads of energy, this is obviously only possible when there is more money thrown at the project.

I saw another technology demo of a floating solar farm recently, which has become a favourite settling spot for sea birds. The panels are mostly covered in bird poo, and producing very little power. I'm pretty sure it was a different installation, as these Dutch panels seem to be mostly covered in algae.

As with all solar novelty projects, the only question that matters is "Did you run out of rooftops?" "No?" "Then FU".

@Ice-tea well - some people havent figured out yet.

Recently another solar project pilot was a 'success' - this time with solar guard-rail next to the roadways...   for security when impact, they put a top-coating over  the panels.
Obviously, the test was a success.  there were only some slight problems to overcome :   the topcoating is not good enough. the yield is below expected.
And there is some issue with the absurd lengths of cables.... due to the nature of a guard-rail... they are long, small, so loads of copper is needed.

These fools should be working on producing panels that produce more power per square cm rather than a silly gimmick.   Even if the project had worked, it's going to be far worse for the sea life under it which depends on the solar energy whereas putting the panels on a roof or other existing man made structure has no drawbacks... well none other than the fact that you can't patent putting panels on a roof.
