Request: IC discussion forum

Can there be a forum under the electronics section for anything related to IC/ASIC/SoC design? Whether it's digital or analog, whether it's about design or theory or questions specific to tools like Cadence? It seems like a big missing thing in this forum.

I would expect such a forum to be a rather quiet place. It's a specialist discipline; not too many people on here would be able to provide advice. Maybe too small a niche and too specialized for a dedicated forum?

Iff there is sufficient content about that, then it would be worth splitting the content into a separate section.

Otherwise, maybe a different venue might have the content? Perhaps edaboard, but they prevent multiple levels of quoting so don't expect subtle to-and-fro conversations.

It's more niche than say embedded systems, but you'd be surprised how many people there are and how active they are online.

The chipdesign subreddit is fairly active, but reddit is about to imminently collapse and people are looking for alternatives. Edaboard is okay but honestly I find their community and moderation to be rude and unfriendly.

Start up some topics. See if there is enough interest. Then decide.

One of the pleasures of this forum is the eclectic mixture of topics. Splitting into subforums might have the disadvantage of creating enclaves. Splitting into subforums unquestionably brings the disadvantage of whether a topic should be in X1 or X2, which is always a pain.

As for edaboard - I was a member for a while, but (like stackexchange) specifically precluding multi-level quoting means the conversations were sterile and boring. OK for "which button do I press to floggle the widget leftwards", but not for the more useful questions about "why floggle the widget since squirdling is often better".

That's the thing though, I don't see anywhere a topic would fit. For example, if I'm designing a bandgap reference or a folded telescopic in 45nm, there don't seem to be any appropriate areas to post that to. The "Projects, Designs, and Technical Stuff" forum maybe??

If you think about it, any tree taxonomy will can never be be unambiguously right. Libraries have known that for millennia! Just as true for my filing cabinet and any shop in any town. The best that can be hoped for is to be able to ignore places the book/file/item/topic won't be.

So, just pick somewhere that isn't obviously wrong - and give it a good title

Yes, you'd post it in Projects.

Definitely there, it's for stuff you are working on, that's what the description says.

Now, there isn't much IC design going on here and you may or may not get responses, but
a) I know there are a few IC designers on this forum so there is that
b) occasionally students asked IC homework questions and such topics wouldn't be entirely unprecedented
