Line endings in forum...
« on: September 05, 2024, 08:44:56 pm »
What's up with line endings in forum submissions?

On my Mac, line endings that I type ("return" key) tend to be ignored; I need to type shift-return. or multiple returns to actually get a newline.

On my PC, text entered as double spaced (hit return twice) ends up as triple spaced when actually posted.

So the Mac text entry seems to be omitting newlines, and the PC is adding extras??!!

(It's been doing this for ages, BTW.  Not "new" behavior.)

Using Chrome on Windows 10, and the "regular" (not simplified-for-mobile) version of the forum, I don't see any anomalies. Could you please give details about the OS versions and browsers you are using?

I typed two carriage returns before this line.
And one carriage return before this line.

And another two before this final line.

It probably also has to do with whether or not you use the WYSIWYG editor
Profile: Look and Feel:
  • Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default.

I see lots of buttons to enter emojies, make text bold or italic or underlined or superscript or subscript or typewriter etc and that adds BBcode to the text.

I didn't know this forum had another option!  I default to markdown on Reddit but you can switch back and forth to WSIWYG there at will while composing a reply with a button click.

Hmm....  the WYSIWYG editor either isn't very WYSIWYG or maybe is an addon that's disabled/not installed here, and I was mistaken - that setting simply controls whether or not the Quick Reply box is visible by default or has to be expanded to show it.  Sory to have wasted your time.

Way Way back I remember similar issues pasting stuff into the Microchip user forums, where how many new lines you got depended on the browser and version, your OS, and even what application the text was copied from.  Pasting from MS Word was notably problematic, and the only somewhat reliable workaround was to first paste into Notepad (or your OS's default text editor) and re-copy it to ensure the line endings were in OS default form that the browser was expecting.

Does it happen on other online forums (I am supposing not but I thought I should ask)?

Does it happen on other SMF (Simple Machines Forum) sites?

There is another SMF forum here:

https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?

They are running a later revision of SMF but they might also know other online sites that are using SMF.

That's not what I see if I hit "Quote" on my own comment. There is no blank line between the "And two before this line" and the "[/quote]".

I've just verified I hadn't accidentally altered the quote while  wrapping it in code tags.  I'm using Chromium Version 126.0.6478.127 (Official Build) (64-bit) from https://chromium.woolyss.com/ on Win10 22H2.

YMMV  :(

I also don't see an extra blank line on Chrome 128.0.6613.119 (Official Build) (64-bit) (cohort: M128 Rollout) on Windows 11.

It's the WYSIWYG editor.  Switch to the HTML editing mode.

Otherwise, the change of the current editor used by this SMF version with a new editor was already discussed.  It was pilot tested here and many were very unhappy with the new editor.  It was more buggier than the current editor, and the new bugs were bigger/more annoying:  https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/are-there-any-eevblog-server-app-youd-like-to-see-installed/msg4562176/#msg4562176

Eventually the forum editor stayed as it is, which is a good thing.
