Are STM STR751 / STR912 still good for anything?
« on: July 27, 2020, 06:30:11 pm »
Since long time ago I have a few pieces of STR751FR2T6 (ARM7TDMI) and STR912FAW46X6 (ARM966E-S) laying around.
I've bought these in a sale out of pure curiosity but never got my hands around to actually make any hardware.
I wonder if it worth building something with them or would it be a complete waste of time now when there's whole lineage of STM32 series and CubeMX/HAL support?
I know that ARM966E-S is another league in terms of architecture to C-Mx and it is probably wrong to make a direct comparison to latest STM32F/H MCUs.

Any ideas? Maybe some useful OSHW project worth building?

MCUs themselves are pretty beefy, but I'm kind of afraid that writing firmware for them without libraries like STM32HAL will be a nightmare.

It would be a waste of time even if software support was there. It just makes no sense to use those old devices in new projects unless they have some specific feature you don't have with modern devices (but that's unlikely).

By the way, original firmware library sources look very much like ancestors of SPL or modern HAL, so maybe it is not all that hard to get these MCUs running.
However, you're totally right about their age. I just thought it might me better to finally put them into work rather than just trowing them away or forgetting of their existence.

Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to throw them away and cut your loses.

Agree. Sad, but true.
