GPIO cables... how do I find them?
« on: December 16, 2023, 09:54:10 pm »
It seems surprisingly hard to find cables or wiring with the proper sized terminal to use with GPIO pins.

I want to find a package with a bunch of different colored wires (if possible) to use with GPIO pins on an MCU.  What do I search for?
I have taken apart more gear than many people. But I have put less gear back together than most people. So there is still room for improvement.

search amazon for jumper wire kit, is that what you're looking for?

like these? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32349445870.html
(the search term was "gpio cables")
...assuming you need them for standard 2.54mm pitch pin headers.

Thanks guys... I would like something with a connector on one end. Yes I tried searching for gpio cables blah blah on mouser, but didn't find anything.

Maybe it's better to find the connectors and just crimp them. But I don't know what to search for. I guess everything is targeted at RPI... I'll search that way.

You want to search for dupont connectors.  That's the generic term these days.   Female for gpio pins.  Male for breadboard though I generally use round pins for breadboard.

AliExpress is full of connectors and pins for self crimping and also premade wires with connectors.

More info that you knew you wanted here:

No relevant hits on mouser for 'dupont'

And we can't buy anything from aliexpress or ebay until we get a post office again. No mail delivered here for months already.

For a multi-pin female connector (to connect with the 0.025in square “header pins” found on many development boards, you’re apparent supposed to buy “housing”, crimp-on receptacles, and wire separately, and assemble them yourself.

Or premade cables with rectangular connectors and 0.1inch pitch…

Thanks again everybody.

I want individual wires with a connector on one end. I found this locally. It has connectors on both ends so I'll probably slice them in half and have 2x the cables.

Yeah I was just going to say that it's quite easy to convert a cable with two connectors into a cable with one connector :)

Sure, but I couldn't even find these until I realized most shops don't know there is anything in the world besides RPI... :D

”GPIO cable” isn’t a thing, because GPIO isn’t a physical port type, it’s a functional definition of a microcontroller pin.

The Chinese terminology for them is “DuPont jumpers”, but as you saw, legitimate, non-Chinese vendors don’t use that Chinese terminology. You’ll find them under things like “prototyping jumper leads” and the like. (As a general rule, the keyword salad Chinese vendors use are poor sources for search terms to use outside of eBay and the Chinese websites, since they just stuff listings with every keyword they think might get a click, regardless of the relevance or correctness.)

Thanks again everybody.

Wrong tool, no matter what the vendor says. 99% of the crimp tools sold for “DuPont” are incapable of crimping a DuPont terminal properly.

Thanks, I did not know that the GPIO pins could be different sizes. Your clarification helps in the future :)

I did buy some cables from a local RPI shop but have not tried them yet.

gpios pins or what ever you call them,    can be anything or any pin size ... it depends if you follow some standard or create your own

normally we call them  dupont  jumper cables

and this is a kit to do them
https://www.amazon.ca/Connectors-Connector-Housing-Assortment-Terminal/dp/B09YV3W1KB/ref=sr_1_56?keywords=jumper+wires+kit&qid=1703790443&sr=8-56

ebay  ali has them

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002646300836.html?

and yes the crimping tool is important, some low priced ones are just junk

If you want to order from Mouser, there is this and a bunch more under the category Tools & Supplies, Prototyping Products, Jumer Wires.
