esp32 and Mac

I have some ESP32 programmers based on CH340. They work fine from Linux and Windows but not from MacOS (on an M1 laptop). Serial communication is there but it won't connect for program download from the Arduino ISP.

I know the ESP32 uses a higher speed connection for download and early Linux CH340 drivers couldn't select it. A later driver fixed the problem. Is there a similar situation for MacOS ? If someone is successfully programming them I'd appreciate a link to a suitable driver or anything else they have found helpful.
