HMC5883L chip difference between two board?
« on: August 19, 2024, 09:30:29 am »
Hello,

Can someone explain me why there are two version of the GY-801 boards where on one there is a capacitor is missing by the HMC5883L pin STEP & STEC chip?

https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/HMC5883L_3-Axis_Digital_Compass_IC.pdf

I don’t understand the difference between these two boards😬

There are several magnetometers with "5883" in their name, but slightly different characteristics. The first one you show appears to be an HMC5883L, while the other could be an MMC5883MA. The latter doesn't need the set/reset cap. The other common one, QMC5883L, also does (and has a different package marking too.)

Oke. What will change if I add that capacitor?

What does the datasheet say it is used for?
It could be a DC decoupling cap that got value-engineered out.

In the best case, nothing. In the worst case, maybe you trigger an internal test mode or similar and break something. The IC doesn't require it and the pins are marked as NC, so likely the former.

Look at the datasheet I posted and compare with those for QMC5883L and HMC5883L.

I’m just curious and wondering why this board not and other board well😉😬.

For safety I will hook it up on the 3.3VCC instead of the 5V rail😬2346033-0
