Some questions for the new bench
« on: June 02, 2019, 03:59:21 pm »
So I might spark some heated debate with this one but here we go.

Recently I am torn down the lab in an effort to redo all the lighting and the walls This included a large electric upgrade to support the bench as well as a new bench to work from. And that is my conundrum. I am interested is “checking in” all the equipment as it goes back on the bench. But most of the gear is second hand and in an unknown call state. I was debating on getting a Mantis for the bench for putting it back together. However as the goal has changed I am leaning to getting a new Bench multi meter and doing a cal check on all the gear as it comes back on the bench. I have a few analog scopes the 2 important ones are a 7603 and I recently got a 7904 that needs to be check as well as a lot of TM gear a few oscillators and function generators and signal sources. The bench meter I am looking at is a Keithley 7510 7.5 digit? If I get the meter I’ll have to put off the mantis a while or get the mantis and forgo for meter for a while. Also can anyone recommend a good frequency counter or at least a good place to start gathering some information about them.

Thanks for the input

What frequency are you going to measure up to, size, , cost(is used  fine).
HP 5335 is a good <200mhz f-counter.
If you own any North Hills Electronics gear, message me. L&N Fan

First, the Keithley is a very nice meter (looking at the specifications).  My meters are Fluke, Keysight and Agilent but I do have past experience with Keithley and like their stuff.  I don't have a decent vision system but use a cheap USB microscope ... works OK for hobby level work.

My frequency counter is a HP 5385A bought used.  It works great but it did fail once.  It was a just a filter in the power supply, so very easy to fix.  There are lots of used counters out there.  Were you looking to buy new?

My lab is overcrowded and I need to do something else now.  I have added two DMMs since the photo was taken.
