New mini rubidium 10MHz oscillator
« on: April 24, 2020, 02:50:42 pm »
Just in case someone needs a nice mini Rubidium oscillator this little (2"x2"x1") guy was just released, made by Suntsu:

SRO10S-10.000M

10MHz ±5×10-11 (±0,005 ppb) at -30 bis +60°C

Voltage between 12 .. 18 VDC. Uses 6 W after 5 Min. warmtime.

MTBF 100.000 hours

PDF attached.

Cheers,

I just recently came across a rubidium oscillator in that format while browsing, I forget who made it but the price was almost $2k.

There's also a chip scale cesium atomic oscillator made by Microsemi, but those are over $5k currently.

It's the sort of thing that could potentially cost peanuts a decade from now though, I remember when green DPSS lasers were over $2k and now you can get those for under $5 from China.

Well, for our US members (thet is you @rhb ;), a phone will not hurt or cost too much:

Call: +1-949-783-7300  |  Fax: +1-949-783-7301
www.suntsu.com
Suntsu Electronics, Inc.142 TECHNOLOGY DR., SUITE 150IRVINE, CA 92618

In EU there is a small PR and marketing research fight between distributors to see who will get the EU distribution account, now in the phase "oooohhh, look a this shiny new thing, please contact us for pricing and availability...", I'm pretty sure that the price in EU will be x2 the US price plus VAT.
Also "inside sources" are saying that our Californian friends also have a marketing campaign, samples for "influencers in the industry", hint, hint  >:D.

The EU main contenders are:

CompoTEK (links in German)
https://www.compotek.de/news/suntsu-mit-unglaublich-stabilem-rubidium-oszillator/

Klamm
https://www.klamm.de/news/1000-fach-h-here-stabilit-t-als-herk-mmliche-ocxos-suntsu-mit-unglaublich-stabilem-rubidium-oszillator-4N1001883.html

and some other smaller guys, that will end being resellers and VARs, by putting a case, sockets, and the latest OLED display, and of course the price will jump to 3000EUR.

The monstrously expensive module that @james_s encountered was most likely this beauty, launched in 2013:

https://www.electronicdesign.com/technologies/components/article/21796083/rubidium-oscillator-claims-1000x-higher-accuracy-than-ocxo

PDF for comparison with our main character: https://www.iqdfrequencyproducts.com/products/details/iqrb-1-4-01.pdf

And finally a tactical boot anchor form US Military (the Tactical Rubidium Frequency Standard (TRFS), gosh this sounds expensive), for fun and educational reading:
https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a192981.pdf

Now we just wait and see how the price will evolve and if the older references will go down in price.

 Cheers,

Sigh...

I really need another rabbit hole to explore, but I'll give them a call.  Meanwhile this was the result of a morning email from a friend in the UK asking about U6.

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/rf-microwave/another-ebay-noise-source/msg3035730/#msg3035730

Sort of got a lot of egg on my face with the initial post, but still a nice piece of low cost RF kit.  I just need to bodge in  a couple of better regulators so it will run on a wider range of input voltages.  But it's a lot better than the BG7TBL version.

Have Fun!
