Got the Symmetricom Mark V working!
« on: May 10, 2020, 08:59:51 pm »
I mentioned this guy before in one of my Cesium repair threads... I won it in an auction really cheap but initially it wouldn't lock onto any satellites.  After taking apart I was happy to see it's LO inside!  I found some docs that referred to a version of it's GPS unit called the Trimble Force 22.  I knew it could work without keys so I got into the menu system zeroized the existing variables and reset the system.  I've very happy to report it's locking onto birds now!  The amazing thing is some initial measurements show it to be much more stable frequency wise than I think any of my other GPS or GNSS DO's!  This thing may become my new house standard over all my other nice DO's.

Look at that local oscillator it has!  Nice score I think.

It has boards inside that say Truetime so it makes me think there was some sharing between commercial and industrial base hardware.  I recognized the keyfill port on the front and at first thought it might not be capable of working without keys... but alas it does.  This actually makes sense because what would you do in the field if you had to zeroize your keys?  Just be lost?  That makes zero sense despite there usually being massive redundancy.
