No cutting legs here! The legs should be more like those of our dog, with bends in them to adapt with ease.
Anyway those reference modules are small and hopefully there won't be a lot of mechanical stress on the LM399.

For completeness here the LM399 reference module from a 40 year old HP 3456A (model with fan). No spacers, but wider landing pattern. LM399 cap is held tight by the bent wires.
