Troubleshooting Eagle --> Gerber
« on: October 20, 2020, 10:30:39 pm »
Trying to get JLC to successfully ingest my Zip'd  files. Can't seem to do it.
The Eagle ZIP file are on this page:
https://tangentsoft.net/audio/pimeta2/dfiles.html

Using several versions of Eagle (from 5.x to latest), I converted - -in several attempts -- to Gerber using this tutorial:
https://support.jlcpcb.com/article/43-how-to-export-eagle-pcb-to-gerber-files

(I have successfully done this for other projects from Tangetsoft.net) .
But, this time,  I see no Gerber view images and the PCB dimensions are missing.
====
Analysis Results
layers : -1
minimum trace width : >=10 mil
minimum trace spacing : >=10 mil
minimum drill size : null
width : null
height : null
Analysis Results
 Unable to identify the layers due to the non-standard filename
 Can not identify the board outline
The new Gerber Viewer doesn't support files upload before July, please re-upload on our quote page to try the new version.
====
 I went to PCBWay.com, up'd the same zip'd Gerber. Got a little further. PCBWay got the dimensions correct and I got to see two images (TOP and BOTTOM) but the trace pattern was a small square in the corner of the green PCB.

If anyone of you want to take a shot, please proceed and make a "duh" fool outta me ;)

You should name your files manually, or add a stackup.txt file, which describes what does what. Or use the industry accepted file extensions for the gerbers.

I didn't create the orig Eagle files (the Tangetsoft.net site projects are not mine but the orig. developer allows free and open access).
I have almost no experience with Eagle or PCB design ... I simply down'd the freeware version, and then followed the JLC tutorial for Eagle-->Gerber . And it mostly worked for another project (also from Tangentsoft.net)
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/manufacture/jlcpcb-topbottom-gerber-view-confusion/msg3285652
So if there are even obvious file or formatting errors, I wouldn't know.

Like I suggested .... down the Eagle zip yourself (from the Tangentsoft page) , convert to Gerber, and see what you come up with.

What I come up with is no issue on JLC running it through Eagle.
Try to familiarize yourself with the program.
Should I do your homework for you too?

The reason Eagle misbehaves on that board is because it's a 4 layer design and the free versions only support 2 layers.

Oshpark takes eagle files.  But, they want $74.50 to do that tiny board.

I'll pull it into Kicad if I cared...

Your egotistical reply is USELESS to me! Indeed, those PCBs images could be spat out by Eagle (or Altium) directly (not JLC Gerber view at all).
Screenshot JLC Gerber View if you want to prove anything. Like this (what I showed in another thread):

And WTF does "Try to familiarize yourself with the program" mean to a new newbie with a learning curve?

What you (or anyone) need to do -- if you really want to help --  is download the orig Eagle zip files from Tangentsoft, convert it to Gerber (see JLC tutorial link in my OP) and report back with results.

Even PCBWay wanted over $50!
About KiCad .... will it accept Eagle files, and convert them to Gerber (what JLC can use)?

As I have explained to you in your other post I suggested tools for you, but you don't want to lift a finger and assume everyone owes you something.
I did do everything you were asking about so don't assume to know what you won't try yourself.
If you understand licensing, I can't give the file to you anyway as I have paid my way.
Here's the proof below. And I did.... I'm done now.

Hi 13hm13,

The Eagle file from https://tangentsoft.net/audio/pimeta2/dfiles.html is a 4-layer design. But in this post you showed a different design.

BTW, I just joined JLCPCB 2 days ago as a "PCB Layout" engineer. My job includes presale technical supports. I still don't have my own JLC email account, you can email me directly when I have it :)

Regarding the online Gerber Viewer from JLC's website, it's still not mature, lots of bugs are not fixed yet, so regard it as a reference. The free software Gerbv( http://gerbv.geda-project.org/ ) is a good choice for gerber file viewing and I use it quite often when I do my own designs. Other free gerber viewers are also available.

In Eagle 9, the Gerber files can be generated easily: File->Generate CAM data.

A friend with Eagle (full version) helped out:

Maybe you'd make more friends if you ditched the entitlement and listened to the help people are giving you here.

Learn to walk before trying to run... etc etc.

Eagle is a popular format with a certain demographic due to its historical free entry level, that advantage is now diminished as there are other valid choices at this pricepoint, some with fewer limitations. Sadly CAD formats are not interchangeable (sometimes even between versions) so a site giving out free CAD files is not always exactly helpful, particularly in this instance when its not compatible with the "Free" limits.

We actually never see files generated by Eagle, small companies seem quite fond of the Labview Ares/Proteus Suite or sometimes Kicad, design firms and larger outfits mostly Altium, and then the odd Cadstar or Orcad user.

12 years ago or so, about the same time I down'd my first free Eagle (5.x??),  I actually bought another german software suite "ABACOM -- S Plan". But the design bug got boring ... very quickly ....and it was on to bigger and better things.
As I noted prev., those Tangentsoft projects I'm PCBing are not my Eagles. Tangentsoft used to offer the PCBs for sale but no longer does so ... they still offer Eagle project files for those who are interested in building PCB on their own dime.
