Tewaycell li-polymer batteries scam, bait and switch
« on: June 02, 2020, 04:56:04 pm »
Hello,

hoping someone considering them for a project sees this warning to avoid a repeat.

    I ordered batteries from :
            Tewaycell,
Shenzhen Topway New Energy Co., Ltd.
            Lithium ion polymer batteries "manufacturer"
            https://tewaycell.en.alibaba.com/

Samples order and shipping went great. I paid an extra 150USD for UPS 3-5 days shipping.

Then, I reordered more of the exact same product :
         - I paid an extra 150USD for DHL 3-5 days shipping.
         - They didn't ship by DHL but a slow cheap aggregator. It showed up 4 weeks later.
         - All this time they lied about DHL being late due to Covid. Even "quoting" DHL to me. (DHL Shenzhen is fine, our other parcels take 2 days as usual).
         - They also blamed the forwarding agent. Tracking shows they handled their part in a day.

         - When the parcel arrived today, the batteries were smaller and lighter but the markings of size and capacity were identical. They claim it's "tolerances" but these are clearly the catalog's smaller size with fake inking. A 5.5mm width difference !

          - I can notice some ink was removed and reapplied leading me to think they don't manufacture. They buy ready-made and reapply their inking.

I filled an Alibaba trade insurance complaint, any tips please? I have a picture of both products with the same markings and screenshots of the DHL debacle. Can I leave a review after a complaint ?

I still need 2x 500 batteries, any trustworthy company please?

Thank you,
Koen

Try PKCell, I've ordered some 100 LIR2450 which performed to the advertised spec, and now quoting some 18650s. They seem to be a real OEM.

Thank you but I need Li-ion polymer prismatic batteries.

Supplier doubled down in the complaint by replying 3.5x34.5x43 instead of quoted 3x40x40 is just acceptable tolerance and DHL did warehouse the parcel but not send it. :-//

FWIW 3.5x34.5x43 dimensions have volume of 5.2cm3 and 3x40x40 has volume of 4.8cm3, thus do not qualify as smaller. Is this the actual size you received? I don't think that such dimension difference is acceptable without prior negotiation but not convinced they have lower capacity.

Does it weigh the same as the sample?
No matter the dimensions, the weight will tell the truth, as long as they haven't been filled with rubbish.
I had a similar thing happen. Ended up designing a new product to use them as they didn't suit the existing product they were purchased for. This was from a company I have used many times before, needless to say I was less than impressed and I let them know it. I have used them again since and got what I asked for and quality was good.
I think most "manufacturers" are just resellers and assemblers.

HA 5.5mm width difference !

Had same problem with some 5mm 100nf capacitors I bought.
They came in as 7.5mm and wouldnt fit in the pcb.
I complained and they told me to get a "real engineer" to look at them !
I have been fully qualified EE for 40+ years !
They then said just bend them to fit.
Ali Express refunded me.
I got last laugh because on next pcb I made holes 7.5mm and used them up.
