Swift S41-20 microscope for home SMD assembly?
« on: May 08, 2023, 10:23:26 am »
I currently mostly use 1206, or occasionally 0805 size SMD, with an Optiplex head band magnifier. While it is “OK”, it is not so good for 0603 sizes which I need for boards working into the GHz range.

I note elsewhere on this forum a recommendation to use an Amscope SE410, rather than the SE400 model, as it was apparently more suitable in terms of working height for assembly/soldering of SMD components.

The Swift S41-20 maybe the same item as the SE410 with a different label. The Swift seems to be more readily available in the Uk (next day from Amazon).

While I can afford the Amscope SM-4B type of microscope, the size and weight don’t seem suitable for the space I have.

Any thoughts, or recommendations? Especially regarding the Swift model. Thanks.

I have the Amscope SE400-X at home and the Swift S41-20 at work, essentially they're the same aside from the Swift has 2 goose neck LEDs. I haven't been able to notice any difference between the two optically, though I haven't had both side by side to compare. Working distance is pretty good (eye balled against some letter sized paper it's around 8.5-9") and I've used it to solder 0402s and 0.5mm pitch ICs without issue. For reference both units I use have the 1x objective len and 10X eyepieces. I will say, the adjustable zoom on the higher end Amscope models is nice to have.

If Amazon in your locale still does free returns, I think the Swift is worth a go and worst case you can send it back!

Thanks Stan, I’ve ordered a Swift. The high end zoom models would be nice but look to be too bulky and heavy for home use.

In the UK domestic buyers have the right to return pretty much anything bought remotely, although return carriage may have to be paid if the item isn’t faulty or incorrectly described.

The Swift S41-20 arrived and is excellent. The dual LED lights really help and are more or less essential.

I like the fact that the x10 and x20 eyepieces can be swapped without needing to adjust the height.

Again thanks for the feedback Stan.

I am interested in this Swift S41-20 model.
For SMS welding and inspection needs, all without paying too much.
You could perhaps present it to us and why not a review.
Thanks again
