PCB XY table

Hi guys

I'm sure theres loads of these but I've not managed to find the right google term for it.

I'm after a PCB holder thats on a X&Y precision stage (with micrometer dials?). I'm thinking of rigging something up (probably use a mill compound stage), but i can't believe this doesn't exist already. How do all these BGA rework $100 specials on eBay work.. surely when you come to put the BGA back on, you need to accurately shift the PCB about by tiny amounts to get it all aligned properly.... or a tight pitch QFP being reworked...

I am interested in either buying or joining together with others on a project to build something like that to help with precise positioning and then drilling holes.  So what I guess I am looking to buy or build is a subtractive xyz table. 

Like a 3D printer in reverse.

(The same jig could also likely also eventually engrave a PCB but small steps first, right now I would just be happy to simply drill the via holes in a more precise, controllable, rapid way.)

Doesn't have to be anywhere near as precise as the device in the animated GIF.

Google tells me its a CNC found on aliexpress and taobao.com

Try and get one with ball screws, rather than what is in that photo...

Matt something that would be WELL GOOD enough would be the 3040Z CNC platform

You can buy it for about USD550 delivered, (without steppers or control PCB) (You don't want the ones they supply.)

it is called the "UNASSEMBLED KIT". I have bought a few from these guys. just tell them to put extra packing on the corners.

there is also a bigger one the 6040Z available in light and heavy versions. again flatpack, no steppers or controller @ 780 inc shipping
and then a 6090Z....

the 3040Z is big enough for any PCB.


I have used one for my paste dispenser, and teamed it up with 3 x $87 closed loop NEMA23 steppers....they have inbuilt drivers, - just supply pulses to drive them......
