With those prices I keep on wondering why there is no hybrid machine out there.
A design like the chinese 4k$ machines but then joystick camera operated for the final placing, so automatically pick the component from the trays or feeder and move aprox. where to place and let the operator rotate and place.
Something like that would safe tons of time and fatiqueness.

There are a number of them, they call them semi-automatic. They don't have any motorized parts though ... if you have that you should just go full auto. Although some have a motorized parts carousel.

This is how the original pick and place machines worked in the 60s for through hole parts. A file (tape?) is loaded (I guess?) and lights come on at the pick location and then at the place location. The operator does all the work manually but is guided by the lights. I've seen vintage videos of it in operation on youtube, but good luck getting the keywords to find it again. Maybe if you got in touch with someone at computer history museum they might know about such video or would be interested enough to find it.

All the big boys make them. Fritsch, Manncorp, Atco and so on.

The biggest problem with semi-automatic the way you describe is that you still have all the problems with the feeders. Placing is the easy part!

Yes I agree that feeders are the biggest and most costly challenge.
The manual assist p&p don't look that great in increase of production imo  vs manual pincet placement esp when you are used to use a stereo microscope and you have the 3d impression where parts land. But when the hands get shaky i understand the need.

Thanks Kjelt. I agree, the camera is not as good as microscope due to 2D view. But the operating ergonomics are much better.
