off-the-shelf breakouts JRC-161
« on: October 30, 2024, 01:59:37 pm »
Where do the JRC-xxx boards from china come from ? Is  there a source that offers a large range ?

I need a quantity of USB-C inlet connectors. I can find heaps of these on aliexpress but they're mostly either power-only or wired incorrectly so they don't enable 5V from a proper USB-C-PD power supply (Needs 5k1 resistor from each CC pin to ground).
I don't know why so many incorrectly wired adapters still exist.

I have, however, found one that's almost perfect - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006640650907.html

It's sold by many sources and has the necessary CC wiring as well as a power led. The only problem is that it has an overmould that's too big for my application. I could cut it down but that seems silly : the pcb is marked JRC-161 which is a numbering style I've seen on many of these small breakouts.

Obviously I could get these made to order. However the setup and assembly costs are such that I'd pay $3-4 per board for 100 instead of  about 30 cents. And all I want is the assembled pcb without the overmould.

Any ideas where I could find this ?

I just returned from (too many) electronic fairs in HK and also went to Shenzhen for a day to the hectic electronics mall. May have specific vendors for the same.

Here is something to get you started:

Maybe ask the seller.

This is the wrong thing I guess? Can you add the resistor to these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003482296998.html

I have written to the seller but I guess they don't assemble them - too many people sell that same thing. I don't think they'd all clone the mould, it's more likely they all come from the same place.

I started with bthe B008. It has the two CC pins linked together and pulled to ground via one resistor. this is the same error that raspberry pi made on the Pi 4 - it doesn't work, you need two separate resistors. I can mod one or two but it's not practical for a few hundred - it needs a track to be cut, some solder resist scraped off and a resistor soldered between tracks.

I have also found some with the CC pins brought to the edge. i can solder two resistors to those but again, it's not sensible in volume. Wiring back to the main board is possible but more work than it needs to be.

Thanks, those are the same items though I have only looked on aliexpress. However I can't see the unpackaged boards there. I will search further.

Aliexpress will be resellers of the goods where Alibaba will often be the manufacturer / factory for the items. Check their listings to confirm. Having said this, you can ping the Alibaba vendors to offer the product at the board level, etc. to meet your requirements. If you do not change anything in the design and just want them to halt the process at stage X then very little MOQs - that is from our experience. If you alter their tooling in any way, then everyone will demand a larger MOQ for the product.
