Does anyone make fully transparent potting boxes?
« on: October 02, 2019, 09:48:11 am »
Just for hobby use. At the moment I'm having to use empty shampoo bottles with the top cut off. A Google search found gel pre-filled boxes for electrical splices, but I just need empty boxes for potting. The whole thing needs to be transparent as my circuit contains an ambient light sensor.

If translucent will do then 3D printed to size is easy and will hold and bond with resin until cured. This rude Occi is about 0.8 Walls (also a layer of tinted glass) and some LED's drawing 5 or 6mA. The other is 6 3030 (roughly 10mA each) Led's shining through about 12mm of 3D print and infill so getting light through it doesn't take much. Different if you need to have variable source for your widget but for yes/no and close to the 0.4-0.8mm wall should be fine.

The other fairly simple option for small volumes is look at Vacuum Forming your boxes. Plenty of how to's online but mine has been in mothballs for several years. Takes some gear to set up but it is quick and cheap for say a few dozen at a time.

If you look for an already existing container make sure your resin is compatible and won't generate to much heat or shrinkage when curing.

Your description sounds like you might be more after a molded result instead of a potting box.

Have you considered something like making a silicone mold to hold the potting compound until it sets, then pulling the set clear block out of the mold once done?

I'm using self healing silicone gel for potting which is soft and remains permanently sticky so it needs some kind of external container to keep its shape and also make it easy to handle.
