Why does KiCad change my track width?
« on: July 07, 2024, 10:58:12 pm »
Another thing that has me puzzled.  I am laying out traces and decided that the row/column lines in this matrix should be 0.5mm (19.69mil).  This is a bit overkill for low speed signal traces, but I have the space and I was having trouble reading the net names on these long traces.

I set the track width to a preset.  I draw the trace.  It appears as 0.2mm!    I can manually change the track width back.  But why?

I see there is some sort of DRC violation when I try to connect to a pad on the same net.  I can get close, but then the trace stops.  I am not worrying about DRC just yet, I want a rough layout and then I'll clean it up.

If I switch the track width to 0.3mm, then it places.  I double-click on the track and see that it has changed the width to 0.2mm.

I might understand if I was using too small of a trace, but too big????

Edit:  Looking at the DRC, I see there is a hole clearance violation.  This is easily avoided by moving the trace to the side.  When I was drawing, KiCad was the one who decided to go that close to the damn hole.

I am connecting to key switch pads if that makes a difference.

Edit:  Nevermind.  I see that a 0.2mm track was brought into a pad and it is forcing everything on the net to be the same size.  I got rid of the small trace and turned off the option that says to use the existing width.
