Why fluke DMMs are the best
« on: January 29, 2015, 08:42:37 am »
Hi there. Coupe days ago I got Fluke 79 DMM from ebay. The multimeter was for parts and not working. I have good experience whit flukes and I know most of their problems.
So I won this fluke and check what I got: (the first 2 pictures)
This multimeter looks like taken from a river. Rust everywhere. Some missing components. When I saw this I was disappointed and I through that this fluke is dead. Anyway I started cleaning with IPA and some other chemicals for PCB cleaning. I cleaned the PCB and tried to power the unit. My surprise was when I saw that the unit works. It indicates something. I continued to clean it. One of the trimmers has corrosed pin, two SMD transistors has missing pins, the input protection 1K 2W resistor was missing etc. I changed all of them with new components. Next step is to desolder the selector. You can see how the pcb looks below the selector. I cleaned everything and the multimeter works! I calibrated using my fluke 187 and now I have fully working fluke 79!

The battery terminals and the small fuse holder looks so rusty and I will try to find a new ones in the future.

Anyway I don't know how fluke makes their PCB's but this PCB is build like a tank. Even after what it was only two small pcb tracks was corrosed. Everything else is in perfect condition. RESPECT FLUKE!!!!

Nice Work - Fluke should hire you, or you should open a Fluke maintenance and refurb business  :)

Good repair job!  :-DMM

Where did you source this 1K ohm 2W fusible resistor?

While I respect the great work you've done, I'm not sure how exactly refurbishing and rebuilding half of the meter meticulously by yourself is a testament to Fluke's quality  :-//

I think he was referring to the fact that it survived all the rust, water damage and still remained accurate after just replacing discrete components.

Thanks guys :)
I brought couple of 1k 2W non flammable resistors from TME. I used them. They are not fusible.
This is the link:

The quality of the pcb is awsome. This multimeter still works after this damage and this means quality. In my opinion most of the modern equipment will not survive in similar rust test

The fusible are hard to find, but I did find some a while back.  F2W210.

PS. Did you fix your 8060A from last year?

twice cheaper :)

about the  8060A No I didn't :(
I will try to investigate the problem  again :)

The price at Moyer, $1, is for 2.  There are 2 pieces in 1 pack for $1 total.

I will review that again and maybe modemhead can now add some suggestions?

edit: which I have done regarding the RJ1-4 varistors.

edit: For those interested.
