Husband's fever approaching 39, he has a headache.  And a pre-existing heart condition. EMT called ...

Best of luck to you both!

That bug is hard to shake. I'm just starting to feel OK. Still coughing a little bit.

As for Ryzen, I tried from x370 to x570. The Asus prime x570 with a 3600x and 64 gb DDR4 3600 CL16 is the fastest home use system I have built so far. Nem speed is important for Ryzen. Get better Ram and a 3600, it does make a difference.

Godspeed, and hopefully you're just being overcautious.

All honesty, X570 teething pains included, the only regret I have with my Aorus Pro WIFI X570 build is I didn't double up on the Ballistix ELITE DDR4 3600 RAM when it was the deal of the day for $117; ever since it set a speed record with a Ryzen 9, I haven't seen the price for less than double that.
:palm:   https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NPKTRS1/

@tggzzz:

Don't settle for Ryzen 2xxx. No matter what the "deal" they give you, it's just them trying to unload "generation before last" hardware; they'll bundle it with some RAM and/or MB which has SOME massive headache or bottleneck that was the reason nobody wanted them BEFORE the rise of Ryzen 3xxx.  |O

The way AMD staggered the general launch, it's like everything up to 37xx was one generation, and 39xx was another.  :palm: The single-core performance of Ryzen 3xxx blows anything else out of the water; AND the multi-thread performance is even better. At this late stage of the game, there is no good reason to settle for less.  :-//

If I weren't building a gaming rig, I second Saskia's ASUS recommendation; tho you may find something you REALLY like (like 802.11ax WiFi or FINALLY enough USB3/Type C ports) if you look into their RoG offerings rather than their workstation boards, which are more oriented towards content creation. :-+

Good hunting,

mnem

well, I called the emergency hotline and they said "call EMT and get him into the hospital" which I did. They will most likely test him for covid on Monday and in the mean time look at his fever and other conditions.
I just hope it's a simple ear infection or something, but these days you cannot be certain.

As for Ryzen 2000 vs 3000: do NOT, repeat NOT buy a 2000. the Ryzen 3000 series is far superior, so far, that all the other stuff gets blown away.

I normally use passmark 9 to crosscheck my systems.
I get a passmark score of about 12700 for an intel 8400/9400, a rough 15000 for an overclocked 5820k, a 14000 for a Ryzen 2600x overclocked to 4.2 all cores, and a 21000 - 22000 for a 3600x with a 3600 at 19800 - 20800.
With a 3700x you would get about 2 additional cores which would bring this up to about 26 - 27000, and we are in deep Xeon territory, far beyound the 9900k.
The best RAM so far for any Ryzen build I tried is G.Skill Trident Z Neo @ 3600 CL16. RAM at least for the Ryzen architecture has a huge impact on overall system performance.

As for the X570 boards you have to look out for your thermals.
The best inexpensive board is the Asus Prime X570P which is also the least expensive. I just got one for 125 Brussels-Pesos. @Gigabyte the Aorus Elite, Pro, Pro Wifi and Ultra are decent boards, if MSI is your favorite vendor, go for the Unify.

The Asus X570 works out of the box with 3600 RAM, no need to further fool around with timings, it works out of the box which is a huge benefit with the 570 chipset and the Ryzen 3000.

quick update from the hospital: they are 99% certain that it's not the Covid-bug, but some other nastiness.
Nevertheless they will do the official test on Monday at 8:00 (when the lab opens ...)
Fortunately we have one of the large biogenetic test centers next to our campus, they can do the complex test (the direct rna detection, not the antibody test) within a day.

Still, this means quarantine for me, I cannot go to our campus or anywhere near without him having a negative test result first.

933 MHz pentium 3 is around 200 so I reckon ~ 486DX2 50MHz unit (last 486 I owned) ~ 8 I reckon  :-DD

I still remember paying £500 for an Elsa GeForce 2 Ultra with 64MB of RAM on it. Then I remembered I had to eat for the rest of the month :-DD

A couple of pictures of the mechanical bits of an HP8562B 21GHz portable (just) Spectrum Analyser.

It is surprisingly difficult to capture just how well all the circuit boards are packed into a confined space. This is one time where a stereoscopic picture would really be helpful, or a video showing the gentle gradual unfolding. But in the absence of those...

Here's a service manual diagram illustrating how they can fold out.

Naturally there is no way these could be held in that position, nor would you want to, since you would need access to both sides of the boards while testing them. So there is a wonderful four segment hinge that allows each board to be folded out on its own, and/or rested against either neighbouring board in either position.

Here it is with boards A2,A3, A4, A5 all folded out, allowing access to the PSU A6 buried in the middle of the instrument.

And here's the hinge with boards A5 (hidden) and A4 still unfurled, and boards A3 and A2 folded out. That gives access to the top of A4 (boring since it is fully shielded) and the bottom of A3. EDIT: swap A2 and A3, doh!

Sounds hopeful; fingers crossed.

Your point about the Ryzen 2000/3000 Zen/Zen-2 (why do they have so many ways of stating one thing?!) is well taken. I'm not interested in trivial speed bumps, e.g. from a 3700 to a 3900.

The importance of memory speed is also well taken; hells teeth, it has been important for >30 years, gulp! Nowadays with many core processors the memory is often the performance limit, since many programs will bust the L1/L2/L3 caches. (Cache is the new RAM, DRAM is the new disk, disk is the new magtape).

The 570 thermals are noted, since I've seen the manufacturers boast about how advanced their heatsinks are. I don't know how close to the edge of the envelope various manufacturers push it. I have the advantage that it will be going into a large case that currently contains an EATX board with two single-core Athlons on it. I suspect that is 19 years old, unlike my current machine which is probably 10 years old.

As for motherboards, I've seen a few bad things about Gigabyte and Linux, and positive indications that Asus supports Linux. The Asus TUF range sounds interesting since they claim it uses better components - presumably 105C caps vs 85C caps. I'm a little sensitive to that issue today :)

Knowing a board works out of the box with a certain RAM is useful. I'll only use recommended/certified RAM.

Thanks.
