Today a parcel arrived in Hong Kong, who was sent by my mom all the way from Portugal. It was send to Hong Kong but some dumbass at the Portuguese Mail Services put it to China. It was sent on the 2019-10-14 and spent more than a month doing this in Beijing:

Hermes doesn't operate in Denmark, so parcels are handed over to PostNord. When a parcel from Hermes is handed over to PostNord, PostNord then gives it a new, Swedish(!) tracking number and forward it to some post office without informing the recipient about anything. The recipient is then supposed to pick it up without being told what, where, and when. What can possibly go wrong with this scheme?

Current probe bought on EVILbay Nov 17 from California, then shipped to buddy in North Carolina where he checked it out for me and a day or two later shipped it to NZ where in arrived yesterday Dec 4.

That's exactly what happens with Royal Snail post from the UK. Gets handed to GLS, they give it a new number, claim they "Tried to deliver it, but I wasn't home" (The security camera at the front door suggests no attempt was ever made to deliver) and then they leave it in some random Newsagent, but don't tell you it's there or in which Newsagent!

That's £216 or 255€, I'd call that a bargain price. I've never seen one shift on FleaBay UK for less than the low 300s and that's usually been for one that, for one reason or another, is less than 100% desirable.

I took the easy route, knowing there was a low probability of success.  I ordered a T9 LED light what would be an almost drop in replacement for the tube and "electronic ballast"  (aka switch mode power supply) in my now-disassembled bench lamp.  It arrived tonight and, indeed, it would be an easy replacement. It even came with clips to hold the light in the fixture.

Alas, here's what I saw when I hooked power up to it (before putting it in the fixture):

That's a 0.5V pp signal. Yes, that's not a typo.  0.5V pp. My scope probe is picking that much signal up when it is six inches away from the light.    

I can hear it on radios a hundred feet away. I am sure, if I cared to run the experiment, I could hear it on radios a thousand feet away.  I promptly boxed it up and returned it for a refund, after leaving a review on amazon (complete with photos).   I didn't open it up but it is a safe bet that if provisions were made for filters - they probably were because that's how the game is played - any components actually required for that function were left off the board to save money.

Back to the drawing board. Its too bad, too, because that bugger was bright!

This is what I was talking about before. No matter WHAT LED light source you use, you WILL have to build your own nice, quiet, resistor-ballast linear power supply for it. There pretty much is NO SUCH THING as a "quiet" LED power supply; the entire industry, and all the specialty silicon that has evolved around it, is based on modular CC buck converters using PWM regulation. Don't send it back; gut it and do the job you know you need to do anyways.

5MHz and it's out of breath. It does have the advantage over similar Heath scopes of that era in that it's DC coupled. The horizontal input jacks are broken off. And as stated in the listing the handle is missing. The trace is tilted and there is no trace rotation. You'll have to loosen the CRT and rotate it. Guaranteed it will need a re-cap.  Other than that...go for it! 

but med, when did low bandwidth specs, busted connectors, missing parts, and mechanical rebuild requirements ever put you off from buying a scope?   

Never...always up to the challenge.  Just simply helping a fellow TE nut (and boy does he need help).     And no, I'm not interested in it. 

Awww, med... you really DO care. *snif* I'm all verklempt.   Thanks for taking the time to enumerate this scope's many virtues... but I'm really looking for something a little more... NOT A DOORSTOP.
