It's all becoming very clear to me. In addition to the 3d printer I would need to buy/build a top tier PC in order to run a decent CAD program (more expense) and be stuck in that ever lasting loop of "More Power Scotty!!" just like a gamer?

And there you go. Bd just dropped 750 either pounds or dollars (don't matter which, it's a lot!  )

quick update on the hp8569b.  (with apologies to indiana jones)

"attenuators.......why is it always attenuators?"

everything else is lookin' pretty good.  but the input attenuator goes 0,0,20,20,40,40,60,60  when it should go 0,10,20,30,40,50,60,70.

will go back to the basement and fettle.  (is that the proper use of the word?) 

might even have to rtfm.

Those attenuators are made like Swiss watches...lots of small parts very finely put together. Magnification is extremely helpful. A common problem is the disintegration of the little o-rings that cushion the action of the solenoids. Assuming, of course, no one transmitted into it and burned up the pads.

The overhangs on that octopus look pretty decent. Still a bit of stringing around the fingers though.

Yeah. There's a small rim where the power went out as well. Not too bad though. I did have to clean that up slightly this time.

I know these attenuators come up frequently on the HPAK mailing list, and based on what I've heard there the issue is often actuator o-rings.  I personally have not yet had occasion to open one up, but your message just prompted me to do a search because it piqued my curiosity as to what exactly the o-rings DID in the device.  This video seems to explain it well; hope this helps.

Interesting. My 191 is in a slide in cabinet like your 106 and also the recently acquired 114.

I think the sine and square wave generators were often sold together in a rack mount case (there was one pictured earlier in the thread). Then people started taking them out of the rack and using the shell you see on mine. It is not really well-thought out... it is just a wrapper and isn't fastened to the unit inside.

Did you have to replace the caps in the low voltage supplies? I did. They were really crusty.

No, they were in good shape on this one, so I left well enough alone. 

I didn't do a full calibration as you did. I did some spot checks and found the unit to be pretty much on the mark so I left it alone. 

There's a quick check out procedure that suggests doing what you did. My OCD combined with curiosity didn't allow me to follow it. For the second 191, I will do that and avoid the twiddling back and forth unless it is necessary.

Once the initial excitement dies down, all of these little bits that you're producing will all find their way into the trash bin before too much time has gone by I expect

Makes sense and I notice that yours does have the hole in lower left which would contain the thumb screw to secure it into a rack. Apparently someone removed it completely.

Have decided to buy a desktop PC. Keyboard just gave out on my T470 already ffs. Fortunately still under warranty so that's going back. Have rammed a USB keyboard in it for now and will order a desktop for later.

Ryzen it is... and custom build. Good job I just got paid up for some work 

Finally, sense has prevailed in Twickenham, laptops are a convenience thing, desktops are serious items and the Ryzen is a good starting point

You want to buy a lightly used RX580 Mister  Depending on how much poke you want there is some very good deals going on the last gen 2600 and 2600X if you need to shave a $

Looking at Ryzen 5 2600X actually.  . 6 cores and 19Mb of cache glory.

I haven't actually built a PC from scratch since 2005 believe it or not.

What operating system will you go for with that? Only 6 cores, pah, my ancient AMD FX has 8 cores, problem is however that hardly any software I have can use them all
