Rigol 1054z detents - suggestions for stiffening?
« on: January 29, 2015, 04:40:54 pm »
I have one complaint about my new scope. When I mash the dial to select a value, it frequently changes the value prior to setting it. :--
Any hacks/mods for making the detents stiffer?

Mine shows up in todays UPS.  I will take a look since many complain about it.

I agree with superUnknown about loose detents when pushing a knob. I would also like to have stronger detents on main knob.

Real solution would be to find identical size/functionality knob (it is not that simple too find exact match) and install it (voiding warranty at the same time).

One thing you can do is to change a way you push a knob - place your palm on top of the scope, turn the knob to required position with index finger/thumb, hold knob in position with slightly bent index finger from the top, then push straight with the thumb.

Behavior Mod workaround? Ugg. I might try to try that. But likely, I'll just continue moaning about it.  :D
I'm not sure I get it either, maybe Dave would indulge us in a demonstration?

Picture could be easier to understand, but try to imagine it.
1) You have to use top of the scope as a stable platform for your right hand. Touch scope with you finger tips above Clear/Auto buttons.
2) You should still have movement freedom for your index finger and thumb. The rest is easy.

Yep, thats whats required. Particulary if this is your first DSO.
Much lighter touch required than some old CRO's.
The described method above is exactly how it's done.

I am yet to get one of these scopes, but did notice that it seemed rather hit and
miss in some of the video's that I have viewed, and also comments in the forum.

My first thought was if the control knob simply pulled off without dis-assembly then a foam or
soft rubber washer or similar between the rear of the knob and the case may act as a brake.

If it worked out, it could be an easy and quick remedy for some of those having trouble,
obviously not the ideal solution as a firm indent would be better, but may be worth a try.

There is also a famous "work-around".....The Rigol Knob Swap.
Many other brands also benefit from this mod.  ;)

The Rigol Knob Swap.

GDay tautech,

Is this just the knob or the entire encoder assembly, my concern would
be voiding the warranty if it was the whole thing that had to be replaced.

I do really need to get one of these scopes, not because I need it,
but so I can stay in tune with what all you other people are up too.

Just swap knobs with a larger one for better "feel".
They just pull/push off/on.

But really we are just having a it of fun....

The ergonomics of the modern DSO are such that with the correct hand position there is NO problem.
If the Firmware acceleration of the encoder is OK they work fine.

Three fingers in top of scope for steadieness and control the MF knob with thumb & forefinger.

Not sure about lefties though.
