That's nearly what I paid for a fully loaded 500 MHz scope, just to turn on the serial decoding features I most often use.

The software options are the first line of defense for sales as they feel like an enormous bargain when heavily discounted or thrown in for free. Software has development cost but not much cost to deliver the finished product. The larger the list price the bigger the discount percentage which makes some customers feel great.

For reference, US$1800 buys you a 4 channel scope with MSO and all serial decoding, and you have change left over for another toy.

Can someone please explain to me the advantage of this over just having normal external digital connectors? Why the need for an entirely new probe system?

Does the "Mixed Signal Oscilloscope" with "Flex Channels" actually come with the logic probes and analog probes?
I'm going to guess and say you only get the analog probes, as the logic probes are listed at $1800ea extra!

What's with the "Fast Acq" button/option - is this a tradeoff between update rate and...?

Like many high model scopes at Tektronix there is a FastAcq button that optimizes the scope acquisition system for fast waveform transfer, storage and analysis. Its very easy to use, and helps users discover rare events happening on test circuit.

So what's the downside - why would you want to turn it off?

Tek DPO scopes have always had FastAcq as an on/off function. It's the only way to get the fast waveform update rate, at the sacrifice of memory, it's only circa 512/1K samples or something.
It's always been one of the more frustrating things with Tek DPO scopes. Not pleased to see it carried over to this new model.
Turning it on basically overrides any other memory depth setting.

Datasheet explicitly says only the analog probes come standard and buyers need to buy the digital probes separately while ordering. 
But they do include a mouse in the box. Excellent deal!

Also I couldn't find any mention of the update rate without FastAcq.

"Stacked display mode" is something I've wanted to see for a long time - it's pain in the ass having all the traces overlapping just to use the full ADC resolution. Do any other manufacturers do this? (My RTB2k alleviates this issue somewhat with the extra 2 bits of resolution, but it's still annoying)

But man, those option prices are bonkers. And surely the digital inputs didn't need such an enormous box poking out of the connector right in the way of touchscreen use - what's wrong with having a small connector and active pod as a lump in the cable?

With all the Buzz going around in the last few weeks, I really had expected more innovation.
The only real new innovation that I see is: 8 Channels!

This is probably a very nice scope with lots of good features but to me it does not stand out as something amazing!

I was told by an app engineer from Vicom that this was going to be a hi-end scope with a hi-end price and was not going to infringe on their current MDO offerings. Sorry but this scope was never intended for this market here but still nice to see that Tek are not out of the race
