Luminance Meters
« on: June 09, 2014, 08:02:47 pm »
Anyone have any experience with luminance meters for looking at brightness of LCD panels?  We are looking for something to verify backlight brightness vs current to evaluate some backlight options on mid side LCD displays.

I'm not sure what level I need to go to for decently accurate readings.   Most of what I see are for indirect brightness, as you would measure to set a camera exposure, rather than radiated brightness.  Not sure if that matter though.

Maybe this unit?

If not, might be looking for one of the Minolta LS-1xx units (pricey though)

Those are more for color calibration.  We are looking for just brightness measurement.  The Minolta looks like the high end of those we found.

We decided to get a ~$150 Extech meter, that has the opaque white typical light meter.  We will get relative numbers, rather than trusted absolute, but that is OK for now.  Not sure what equipment is required to verify something like 300 nits for a smart phone screen, but it is probably fairly pricey.
