I had the scope a few years ago and am no longer quite up to date:
Is it still the case that you have to renew the hack as soon as you load new firmware onto the scope?
If so, then nothing has changed in the last 5 years...

HI mate,
Not sure if you know yet, but now YOU CAN UPGRADE THE SCOPE AND HAVE ALL THE OPTIONS AND IT'S PERMANENT.
Go to the links in the first post to the Cloud and you'll find the files there and the PDF that explains it all, it's not hard
and many people have done it, You just need to know which model you have and that will determined which script you use to upgrade.

if you have 70MHz Model you use   
rigol_kg2.py

if you have 100MHz Model you use
rigol_kg2_3_000.py

we've worked out a lot of the problems and it seems like it full steam ahead now

yes, you still have to use the patch after every update.

UDPATE :   NO NOT ANYMORE
We now have a PERMANENT SOLUTION, we are not using the Dr Mefist0 Patch method, but instead
the DrMefist0 FULLY LICENSED Method,   It totally works

Initially we had some problems with the 1 script where some people who had Models that WERE NOT
MSO5072
MSO5074
were having issues and the script wasn't completing.

WE'VE FIXED THAT. there are now 2 scripts  1 for the 70MHz and 1 for the 100MHz Models  Including MSO5000BND Bundle options.

after you do this, You won't have to patch again... EVER !!!
Just upgrade as new official firmware files become available, Nothing to worry about.

You need to keep up Martin72, things have changed.
That said, applying the original update following a firmware update is very straightforward; not at all a bind and keeps the MSO5000 fully featured.

Back on topic - Martin, thanks for the additional videos man, will work through them.

His question was not how easy it was.

With Rigol DS1000Z you applied the licenses and after that scope was unlocked and you didn't have to patch anything ever again, even if you loaded new firmware.
So his question was very on the topic, and he asked it because he wanted to keep up...

So answer to his question is : Yes, every time you load new firmware you need to patch up again, but process was made to be very easy, so it is not a problem. But you need to patch up every time,  it is not one time job as it was on a Z machine..

Have you upgraded to the FULLY LICENSED METHOD YET ?

Have you done this yet, or are you still on the patch ?
if you're still on patch, go to the link in Post 1 download the PDF and follow the instructions,  it's easy, Lots of people have done it
and it's proven to be working

Just in case you were still wondering, We've had a few advancements

1. THE UPGRADE for the MSO5000  Now works beautifully

2. Not only MSO5000 but MSO5100 and MSO5200

3. Many people have upgraded with success

4. There was only a small number of people that got an Assertion Error.
    BUT I RECENTLY FIXED THAT AS WELL.

NEW UPDATE : MSO8000 Is now also do-able and very possibly MSO7000.
        Also, 2 new scripts have been created for MSO5000 to cater for various scenario's

it's full steam ahead now.

           But all in all asp did the heavy lifting.

1. it doesn't really matter what version your scope is on

2. Delete and discard of all other scripts that you have and use this one moving forward
   (it will work for ANY MSO5000, MSO7000 and MSO8000)

3. Ensure your working directory has the script copied into it
   and delete all Priv.pem files from it

4. Assume your I.P. Address is  10.1.1.666
RUN -h  HELP and CREDITS and to familiarize yourself with the commands you will be using.

This specific thread was created (Not for Licensing and Hacking) but for scope understanding and it's features.
But i have however done you guys the courtesy of including and updating the hacking progress

Here is what you need to do

On the first page of this thread there is a link.

TO UPGRADE, YOU ONLY NEED THESE 3 FILES

MSO5000 DrMefistoLicensing Method.pdf   THE INSTRUCTIONS
MSO_Rigol_LicensingUtility_2.10b.py        THE PYTHON SCRIPT
UPGRADING TO 350MHZ (1.3.3.0)             THE GEL FILE

Now, Just briefly  the 1.3.2.2 file is still there JUST IN CASE anyone needs it, But you don't really need it anymore

YOU WANT TO DO THIS

- You are on 1.3.0.1    YOU WANT TO IMMEDIATELY (Before any hacking)  Upgrade legitamtely to 1.3.3.0
so Use the GEL file, put it on USB, go into your scope, Select LOCAL UPGRADE and let it run and restart

- After that, it'd be a good idea if you did a SELF CAL

- Then Crack out the instructions and read them,   Do your backups as instructed

- And finally you're gonna install python as instructed and then you're gonna License your scope and see FOREVER,
it'll be easy , don't worry

if you have any problem, don't hesitate to reach out and if it's still hard, and we need to do a 1 on 1 session, that's no problem.

The script has come a long way since it started,  it's now really easy to do and you don't need to really worry about restarts or hanging
or starting on a certain version or if you are on a version that is too low or whatever.
the only thing is, that VNC Viewer isn't supported until version 1.3.2.2   so you should upgrade to 1.3.3.0 to get all the supported versions.
You see, when the script looks at your scope (at the time is tries to license it) it gives you ALL AVAILABLE options,
Now if your version is lower there are some stuff that won't be available because of that.  so STEP 1 - Upgrade to the latest version


Do that, Tell me how you go with it
Now, i didn't really want to make this post about Activating, but i'll make an exception this one time so that others can briefly read it.
