How much noise is normal with a TDS7104
« on: August 22, 2021, 09:10:44 pm »
Hello experts,
without a probe, the oscilloscope will show this noise.

Is that normal?
Regards

Mine shows 1.1-2.2 mV peak to peak.

Depending on what the settings are on the inputs, yes it is normal.

Your scope is broken - give it to me  8)

To see the noise of the scope you should prevent any pickup with an open input, short the input or put a 50 Ohm Termination on it. And no wire loop...
Why do old shaffner filters blow? - because there are rifas inside.
Why do rifas blow? Only time shows if the best new thing is really best. Here it is not.

Das könnte Dir so passen  :)

Even with short-circuited inputs, the noise does not change.
When I connect the probe to ground nothing changes in the noise.
A connection to Probe Compensation provides this result.

I suspected that the capacitors were failing on my TDS7104.
My Tektronix TDS 684A oscilloscope that was not used for 9 years
also showed this noise. Shortly afterwards it was broken.
As it turned out, many capacitors on the TDS 684A have leaked.

If the noise on the TDS7104 is normal, I don't need to worry.
