Function generators with 50ohm termination question?
« on: February 13, 2015, 03:00:44 am »
I have a Rigol DS1054z-S with waveform generator, it's got a 50ohm and hi-z option.

Do all function generators have 50ohm series resistance? Does enabling the 50ohm mode make it like the left image and hi-z the right image?

Many of them do.  Some of them allow you to specify what the load impedance is (for when it is not 50, and not very high Z). The 50 output impedance is fixed.  Specifying the load allows the generator to mathematically compute the voltage at the load and adjust the source amplitude as needed to achieve the user specified output amplitude at the load.

Wow thanks, and a video too! I was subscribed to your YouTube channel too, just haven't had a chance to watch them all.
