Fluke test leads
« on: January 28, 2015, 01:21:25 am »
Hi,  First post here, forgive me if this subject has come up before.   I have a Fluke 73-II that has served me well since around '92 and have the TL-71 leads on it and they fit nice and snug with no wobble at all.  I have recently purchased a used near mint Fluke 87-V,  However when I  put the TL-71 leads into the 87-V they wobble a bit...I'm concerned that something may break in the meter.  The stock leads that came with the  87-V look like the TL-75 and fit snug with no wobble at all.  I also noticed the center pin in the lead under the plastic sleeve (meter end) is a bit longer on the TL-71 vs the TL-75.  Anyone else notice a little wobble with their TL-71 leads on a 87-V ?

Welcome to EEVblog forums.

Yes the TL-71 wobble a bit more than TL-75s on my 80-series meters, but not so on the older 70-series.  Primary reason is that the jack inside diameter is over 1mm larger on the 80s, so the shroud does not fit snugly at all.  Also, the TL-75 plug has a 4mm solid post that is split to make it springy, whereas the TL-71 plug uses a lantern-style spring on a thinner post.

The TL-71 plug shrouds have a small band up near the strain relief that is a bit wider than the rest of the shroud.  If you trim about 2mm off of the shrouds, they will sink farther into the jacks. This band will then fit into the jack perfectly, which will make the whole affair quite snug.
