Author Topic: Agilent MSO8104A rebuild and upgrade, got some problems with 89600 VSA  (Read 1611 times)

Hi@all,
I recently rebuild a Agilent MSO8104A. I swapped the dying hard drive for a new SSD, increased the RAM from 1GB to 4G (only 3.25 are detected) and reinstalled the software with new versions.

The scope was already preinstalled with 89600 VSA, however apparently it never worked. The VSA does not detect the local instrument, instead some simulated instrument is used. I checked the manual for the installing the VSA software on a Infiniium Osciloscope, however it was not really helpful. I run on Scope v05.71 and VSA v11.21. Anyone had similar experience and knows a solution?

Just a stupid upgrade idea: The current hardware uses a Intel Celeron D 352. Can it be swapped for a Core2Duo?  ;D

The MSO8xxx and the 5483x Scopes are supported until the version VSA8.00 only. Later versions of VSA do not support these scopes. I hope this helps...

EDIT: I had the same problem with a 54831D scope and a newer version of VSA. I then tried different older versions of VSA and 8.00 was the one that was working. I remember of finding a document stating that 548xx is supported until V8.00, but I can not find this document anymore, nor can I remember if the same applies to the MSO8xxx scopes.

EDIT 2: Found it, but it only mentions the 5483x

That’s not true, the Infinum 8000 scopes are still supported by the latest 89600B version:

This note says that embedded operation (i.e. installation of the VSA software on the scope) is not recommended for Infinum 8000 scopes, though. This may be due to the slow processor in these scopes, who knows.
 
My Infinum DSO8064A can run 89600A version 12.0 just fine. Performance is good after replacing the Celeron for a 3.2GHz P4 ;)

So best bet would be to do a recovery and reinstall everything again (original software versions and then move to never ones)?
Btw: the socket is LGA 775, so a Core2Quad should fit in there ;) Not sure about the higher power requirement (65W vs 110W)

Infinum 8000 use intel DG915GUX OR Adlink M880 mainboards which both don’t support Core 2 processors, only P4 generation :(

Some update:
After a complete recovery, the VSA software started to work and detected the instrument on the local GPIB. However the Spectrum Analyzer Software did not detect the instrument, which is probably expected. Installed then updates for both the scope software and VSA. VSA is still happy.
Need to figure out which most powerful CPU I can use for the board. It is actually a Adlink M880 board...
