Interesting chips you have seen
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:05:40 pm »
While stripping an old Playstation the other day I found this interesting gem hidden inside the optical drive. Unusual in that it has all the optics of both the laser and the photodetector in one package, all on multichip modules with as well the photodiode amplifier. All that is outside the package is the diffraction grating/mirror and the focus and tracking lens assembly, all on a nice die moulded and machined zinc alloy casting.

The rest is common, aside from the massive thermal pad between the 2 heatsinks and the processor and support chips. Even covers the memory chips but they are not cooled by the heatsink. Power supply only has a single 12V rail that it provides.

Anybody got interesting chip pictures you want to share here?
