RIGOL DS2000A - Doesn't Delete Files in Storage
« on: March 31, 2024, 06:12:46 pm »
Hi Guys, I have an interesting problem.
My Rigol DS2000A (as the title suggests) which i have owned for approx 10 years is not giving me the option to delete files in the internal storage

It's a DS2000A unlocked with all Options to 300Mhz
it's working fine, Never really given me a problem
it's upgraded to the latest firmware  00.03.06

the normal procedure to delete a file in storage is to go to Storage, Select the C Drive, Then select the file and all the available options with highlight, one of them being "Delete".

As per the photos' you can see that i have 1 .stp (Setup File) which i wish to keep.
This file can be deleted (NOTICE THAT IT HAS FILE PROPERTIES).

Now i want to delete the all the other files, as per the photos, they are of no use to me , I notice they do not have any file properties and thus when selected cannot be deleted because the
delete option does not present itself.

I have tried
DEFAULT

I have tried
FIRMWARE UPDATE

i have tried
SECURITY CLEAR (This is supposed to actually delete the entire drive contents regardless)

i have tried restoring the scope to factory defaults

There doesn't seem to be anyway to get rid of these files.
I contact Emona Instruments a while back, they said, Just go into delete and do it that way, i said, it doesn't work that way.
they said.. Just try it , it'll work (Yeah... Great  LOL)

I was thinking, if anyone out there understands the hacking process and how the internals work,  I imagine it's not  a hard drive but instead the storage would be system storage on a chip.
so... There must be some way to interface with this I.C. and force the deletion of these files

it seems that when a new file is created it has properties and delete's just fine,  it would seem to me that these files have lost their properties or are perhaps corrupted.
in which case there should be a procedure to remove the corrupted files.

If we can figure out a way to interface with the chip then there should be a way to change some values or delete them so that the files are removed upon reboot of the scope

ANY IDEAS ?

I think these are "built in" filenames and you might not be able to delete them.

Maybe LocalSetup0.stp is the only one that was a real file (because it has a size/date)?

They are not built in filenames, they are filenames that are user created, they are Setup Files, Waform Capture files and screenshot files.
they were not there when i got the scope

Now given that it's storage there has to be a way to delete them. it would appear that they are corrupted, which would explain the lack of file attributes, but even corrupted files from a computer have a way of being erased.
this is why i was interested to hear from someone who has experiencing diving into the hardware of these things.

as for Local setup, that's the default name that the system gives a setup file .
and all the files are REAL files, Why would they not be ?  if they weren't real they wouldn't be there.

in a computer system every file is a real file, if it's not , it has no purpose .   they are all real files,
they are not affecting the scope functionality, however i do want them gone because i like things to be organized.

From the DS2000 manual:

For internal storage, those "filenames" are fixed predefined storage slots.  You can't erase the storage slots but you can create and erase the contents of them.
For external usb storage, you can create and delete named files, limited by the capacity of the usb device.

WELL I'LL BE JIGGERED !!

that's kinda stupid.
so you're saying that what i'm seeing there are PLACEHOLDERS and not potentially corrupted files

well here is what i know
1. Those placeholders were not there when i bought the scope, i think i got the scope from Version 1.1 or something like that
and i upgraded and unlocked it to version 2.1  but they absolutely were not there, initially i saved 1 setup file and i did 2 or 3 screenshots
playing around with it first day when i got it home and those were the only files there

2. Recently i did 11 updates on the meter to get it to the latest version 3.6 i think
so... What ? Perhaps this came in in an update or something did it ?

Well i'll be jiggered, Not exactly the most obvious thing is it ? and combined with the fact that i'm speaking to emona instruments about it
and they are scratching their heads you have to wonder who designed this and why , why wouldn't you hide the empty slots ?

OK, i'm gonna test this by filling all the slots and seeing if it populates them all and seeing the number of files changes.
as well as deleting them all

I tell you what, if it ends up being what you said it is,   THAT'S REALLY DUMB on the part of Rigol
i am absolutely Jiggered by this information

I'm curious what is the date of that manual ?

So it would appear that rigol threw me a curve ball and made me think that these files were all created automatically at one point
and then became corrupted.
Suprising that they themselves didn't know that this was just the storage memory structure and the slots were placeholders
WOW

It's attached below.
Hmm, Interesting
well, your Manual is from 2015, I actually have in my records the Manual from 2013 which was download very close to when i bought the scope.

In your picture (which is the identical picture in both manuals) it shows as FIGURE 14-2   in my Manual is shows as Figure d and also it's in Section 13 not 14
THIS HAS NOW GOT MY CURIOSITY AROUSED

I know absolutely there were no placement slots when i bought my meter, I also know i didn't really go through the manual in depth.
and i know i played with the storage part quite a bit, i even have screenshots of the waveforms that i took at that time, i even
have a screenshot of my scope with the trial period before the upgrade THAT WAS 2014 (According to the file properties) and that sounds
about right to me , my scope was on version 2.1

this is very curious, My only explanation for all this is
- when i got my scope on Version 2.1  those slots were not visible
- then after version 3.0 i guess they changed it so they were and then included it in the user manual as an update thing.

I don't know.    OK, I guess this has been interesting , but at least i know now that they are not corrupted files

NOW IT BEGS THE QUESTION....... HOW DO WE BLOODY HIDE THESE THINGS , I mean you don't get this on the MSO5000 ,
Who needs to see the slots if they are not occupied ?  We have Ram in our computer as well, we don't see every blank Memory address.

if there is a way to hide these things, i would be inclined to do so ,  I'm gonna speak to Emona about this.
if there isn't, I guess i just have to live with the effects of the firmware update, but i would imagine there would be a way to hide it.

ANYWAY..........THIS HAS BEEN FUN  HUH ?   LOL
