It's great value for a kit.  You can learn a lot by building it.

It's bandwidth is 200 kHz which is useful for audio and not much else.  It only has 1024 pts of sample memory and, these days, we want multiple megasamples.  It is only single channel and that is a pretty serious limitation.

You will outgrow this thing pretty quick.  That said, I'm going to order one as a kit for my grandson to build.

Why would you want this?

If you want a cheap oscilloscope - ebay a cheap one. It will probably be an analogue one but it will be far better than the cheap thing.
If you are patient, you might be able to pick up a DSO for a bargain price.

Yes!

It's very limited as an oscilloscope but I don't think many people will deny it's good value.

It's also good practice for soldering, etc.

You can achieve the same oscilloscope functionality using your soundcard and a software oscilloscope, which you can get for free.

While I mostly agree, it's a hard lesson to learn about oscilloscopes when you blow up a PC that's worth an awful lot more than one of those crappy little 'scope kits.

The kit is of very limited value but it's so low cost it's got value for experimenting with and learning on.

Personally, i'd recommend hitting eBay and local swap/flea meets to try and find a 'proper' scope.

I guess you could sum it up as: value as a scope, low; value as a kit, good.

Do a forum search for 'DSO138', you'll find lots of useful posts/threads.

It's best to get a genuine JYE one, there have been lots of problems with the PCB quality of clones, and if you want support, JYE will require a photo of the back of the board with the S/N sticker.

You can find the plastic case separately on ebay.

I bought one, and it was fun to assemble - there is something strangely therapeutic about soldering. I gave it awar (along with a pile of other stuff like a multimeter, Arduinos, breadboards, components, etc.) as a high school graduation gift to a family friend going into EE/CS at Uni.

It is of limited usefulness, but if you have only basic tools like a multimeter, then it is an inexpensive addition to the toolbox.
The one you linked to is not a good deal. You can find better. Try not to buy a fake or copycat kit - not only are you not supporting the designer of the thing, but they sometimes substitute incorrect components. The original designer of these is JYE Tech and their PCB is always red. Black boards are fakes, and even some red ones are too.
