I wouldn't be at all surprised that many of them would struggle with a cell phone. I can certainly say that many bought the $50 NanoVNA, I suspect thinking it would be as easy to use as their $50 analog multi-meter. They have heard the term SWRs and know they need to get their SWRs down, as they have passed their exams and are of course experts in RF.
Several years back, I was asked about designing some hardware for an Apple cell phone. I spent some time reading about their ID that they required for all hardware devices and eventually went through some hoops to gain access to their inner sanctum. Once there, all I really gained was more marketing BS. The hierarchy reminded me of some organized religion and I walked away from the project.
I did play around a bit with a friends Android after getting Dave's 121GW meter which seemed like a much more hardware developer friendly platform.
