Need some advice on Shelving
« on: April 14, 2019, 02:12:04 pm »
I am rebuilding the lab currently and I need to expand the bench a little. I am looking to get some shelving for in use test gear and a work bench. The space is large so I might have to build a bench to fit just not sure how to design the shelving. Or if there is a good product off the shelf so to speak that works well for test gear some of it older with some decent sized transformers in it so heavy.

An explanation of my setup with long span shelving is in the linked thread. I've also provided some options that I like that are ideal for heavy gear.

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/quality-shelvingracks-deep-enough-for-boat-anchors/

1. Low profile shelving mounted behind the bench, heavy duty side shelving.
2. Heavy duty bench with built in shelving.
3. Heavy duty shelving behind bench, suits a large collection of boat anchors.
4. Another example of heavy duty bench with built in shelving.
5. Long span bench and built in shelving which uses tube steel rather than right angles.

Those heavy duty shelving examples are different from long span however gives you an idea of the options. Long span ended up being a cheaper and stronger option for me and suits if you have more space. The color height and shelf material in all these examples are usually optional.

The power solution I chose for my shelves can be found in this thread.

The last example probably wasn't great, it looks rather ugly but like I said you can get it in different colors, sizes and options. If you are running multiple spans look for the verticals that have parallel keyholes otherwise you will have to stagger your shelves or buy extra verticals.

Hardware stores local here sell a variety of dressed timbers for benches, these can be cut to size so you can have quite a nice steel framed bench if you want to.

Yea I have a few boat anchers I need to get on shelving to be useful. I am trying to avoid the wall mount shelving if I can help it as I am not sure it will how many transformers. and I found that if I had a decently wide bench the test gear was a little far away to be useful if you go more then one tear in gear. The lap space is taking shape it is a decently long span and I am even considering using a 19 inch server rack for some gear to get the density up as I need it. Everything is starting to come tougher. I am even contemplating ESD flooring.
