Hakko FX-888D
« on: September 04, 2013, 10:16:41 pm »
Got a new iron today and was surprised to see the digital readout and no big dial.  I thought I was getting the one with a dial.  Should I send it back and get the one with a dial or is this one okie dookie?

Thanks,

Tim

I have one of these and I don't complain about the buttons. Seems like people who are used to the dial are complaining though. Anyway, the "analog" version is discontinued, so I would think it could be problematic to get a swap.

If this is your first station and you don't mind the buttons, there's no reason to worry. It is every bit as capable and has some extra features (presets, real time readout, password ++)

Tip: get a thermal pad like this one, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to swap hot tips =)

The dial model (which is what I have) has been discontinued, as far as I understand. I wanted the dial model so I got one before it was too late.  :)

I have heard of people screwing up the calibration by pressing the buttons before they knew what they were doing, so be careful.
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

And to make it fair, you would only swap the base, not the iron or the holder.

While being able to twist a knob quickly is nice, once you get the hang of the interface it's very easy.  I don't mind it and really like the real time temperature display.  I do wish there was a more simple up/down button set though, but presets really do all the work.

Is it true that you cannot get BCM/CM bits like this for the 888 ?

Why would you change the tip while it was hot?

So you don't have to wait for it to cool?

That's what the extra D stands for. The original was the FX-888

If only I could get one in The Netherlands for a fair price...

I found it tiring to dick around with pliers to swap the tips while hot. The thermal pad makes it easier, but I wouldnt go back to this after using the FM-2027 iron with its proper hotswapping.

Ive used the 900M series tips with this iron, and that works a treat. There are a lot more to choose from in this series.

If its easy and cheap to find the "fake" iron, here what I did with the problem of swapping tips when they're hot -> Here
