Extremely cheap toys from china suggestions
« on: October 30, 2017, 09:15:51 pm »
Can anyone suggest some ridiculously cheap I.e. less than a couple of dollars / pounds things you can get from China, particularly interesting modules, components, boards, kits? The more stupid and dangerous the better.

I feel like ordering some stuff and forgetting about it for a few weeks and then getting interesting junk roulette deliveries :)

Why not just sit down and watch a Big Clive video until the feeling passes?

The small high voltage module might fit your specs, especially if you fire it up  in the garage with some gas fumes.

Because I want to experience the joy of shite not through the portal of youtube :)

Ordered. 400KV version.  :-+

I've got a 40KV probe so it'll be interesting to see if it actually gets anywhere near that potential. I doubt it'll get anywhere near that. The entire thing would break down before it got anywhere near even 40KV.

In lieu of an actual static electricity gun, I'm wondering if one of those could be used to create an ESD testing device. Maybe it's a bit too much?

I don’t have a way to measure the voltage but it will arc across 1/8 - 1/4 inch, maybe a bit more. That doesn’t seem anything like 40 KV to me

I was just looking at what voltages are needed for what arc. I guess that could be a fairly crude method of establishing the actual voltages involved.

We used to rely on that to select plate capacitors for high voltage RF amplifiers

Can you tell us about that process?

There are actual static electricity cannons. Oddly enough they are marked as levitating foil toys, despite the fact they pack a hell of a punch and can fry electronics. I'll try and find some, but I don't know what they are called.

EDIT:

The things with the foil or foam balls and rings that hover in front of the stick by static.

We would estimate the breakdown voltage of variable capacitors by measuring the distance between adjacent plates. I keep thinking 10 thousand volts per inch, but I am not sure that is correct.
Wikipedia says
Although air is normally an excellent insulator, when stressed by a sufficiently high voltage (an electric field strength of about 3 x 106 V/m or 3 kV/mm), air can begin to break down,
So I guess it’s pretty close.

There are plenty of Tesla coil kits for under a fiver.
