I'd be concerned about the capacitance of a MOV affecting the performance of the signal generator. It can go up to 2MHz.

Did not know that (I was thinking audio frequency). 
OK, how about two zener diodes in series connected cathode to cathode.  The point is, if high voltage transients are expected in the future, then some form of limiting is a good idea.
