Please help me diagnose my jbc DI-2D fault
« on: October 07, 2021, 02:15:18 pm »
Hi all. I have a JBC DI-2D.

Bought it with the intent on repairing it and use it with the rest of my JBC stuff. On powering for the first time it worked great for around 2 mins. No issues at all. Then started throwing an error 2 open circuit. Looking this up it says the cartridge is open circuit of a fault with the hand piece. However, I have tried all 3 known hand pieces and holders that I have and all show the same fault. I have checked all 4 mosfets and all ok. Updated firmware but still the same. I bought it with this know error so was supprised it worked off the rip.

I’ve tried researching how these stations work but minimal to no info out there.

Would anyone know or be able to point me in right the direction on what to check?
I’ve messaged JBC but no response (not surprised)

Many thanks

Steve

Hey steve

I have a CD-2D unit.
If you need me to take it apart and measure on some specific points let me know.

What have you tried so far ?

Kind regards

Check with a magnification glass for cold solder joints (running for a couple of minutes, then fail, is a typical symptom).
If you can rule out the handpiece that's great - start from the plug backwards.
Cold spray might help.

Cheers for the info. I have spent a few hours with the microscope but didn’t really help. I have tried 2 hand pieces and tweezers. All do the same. Just trying to work out what part of the circuit is responsible for sensing and open circuit. I’m thinking temp circuit is to blame. Sometimes if I turn it on it instantly goes into fault. And after a min or so eventually starts to work. So thinking dodgy solder joint or ic somewhere. Have asked jbc if they can help and they said send it to them. No thanks. 🤣

Check the components which have a lot of mass.
This includes the ribbon cables. Try to resolder each of them.
I'd say those 6 pins in a hexagonal shapes right above those 0R220 resistors are worth resoldering each joint.
The thermocouple section (temperature section) will be done in that OP07 left above those 0R220 resistors.

Is it a possibility that if an operator used this on a live circuit it fried the more sensitive TC circuit ?
Maybe replacing the OP07 could be an option... Highly unlikely if it comes good sometimes, but worth a shot if everything else fails.
You could try and probe that output signal from the OP07 to see if those values correlate to working / not working behaviour of your unit.
(Take proper care of sensing with your oscilloscope, watch dave's video's on not to blow your scope up if you are in doubt)
If you can lend a thermal camera from a fellow engineer, i'd say a thermal view can shed some light as well..

Measuring without energy on the system between some points (continuity mode) and wiggling the cables around can also bring alive some intermittent circuits..0

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to help me 🙂.  Those pins have been resoldered. I actually removed the plug to check trace direction and all soldered back on with leaded solder.

I have touched up and resoldered a few suspect looking solder joints but to no avail. It does sometimes go good if I wiggle the ribbon cable. But that could just be complete fluke. I did resolder every pin on the connector as there was a few loose joints but it’s so hit and miss it’s not really giving me any good indication as to where the issue lies.

I’ve had my FLIR thermal cam on it and only one spot that gets warmer than the rest and that is near where the big white opto is located at the top left of the board. I think this is normal though.

I will continue with my investigations tonight while I await my delivery of the op07c.

I bought a HD 2B station, done the modification in order to use both C245 and C470 tips and now the station throws warnings messages when passing fron sleep to operaton mode (warning 2 open circuit, then warning 0 and sometimes no tool even with the tip inserted). i am very curious what was the problem with your station and how you fixed it.
Thank you!

Hi, I have the same problen with my JBC CD-2E soldering station. When soldering a live wire, the station blown up. Now it shows the Warning#2 open circuit message, it does not read the temperature (always shows 20ºC) and the tip gets power constantly. I have replaced all the OP07, the LM358, the burned R220 resistors, and the burned 3H7 next to the ribbon. But it is still the same.
Any advice?
Thanks!

I finally figured out what the problem was. It was the 74hc4053 analog multiplexer. One of the inputs conected to the tip ground was broken. After replacing the component, the station worked again.
