New Repair Board!

Someone raised this one recently, and I think it's a far request, a place to ask repair related questions.
So here it is.
This separate board should mean that repair questions get more visibility and will stay visible for longer.
I'll need to move some old repair threads over to here as time permits...

Is it worth having a sticky thread with a few links to valuable documents that are pertinent to this new board?
And/or
As we are getting many newbies  identifying the forum as a place able to help them with their busted stuff, could we make these links invisible until they are members and/or signed in?? 

Their are several good manual repositories on the www, maybe some links to them?

First, nice choice for a board.

Next how about a small intro video showing some common mistakes / issues, not test procedures.

- Check with eyes and nose before powering up.
- Don't sit a pcb on a pair of pliers then turn on.
- Safety glasses
- Take a picture or draw a diagram so you know how to put the thing back together.
- If you want to show some soldering how about repairing a vaporized track.
- Avoid high voltages they can kill you!

Yes, interesting idea, if it could all be condensed down to a useful general purpose kind of list.

What would be nice to read, aside from people asking for help, would be stories about repairs. Magazines of days gone by use to have some entertaining fault finding tales

Yes, interesting idea, if it could all be condensed down to a useful general purpose kind of list.

- Opening a case, the fine art of spudgering, why there are arrows on a case / pcb.
- Soldering a wire to a test point that you can't reach.
- What is "burn in" after a repair.
- Save any parts removed until you have verified the repair works correctly.
- Mark or measure pot values before twiddling.

I was reading in another thread that you may think this (repair video) would be opening a can of worms. I agree if you get into the test side it would be crazy. The board is good for actual repair questions that's what it's here for.

I'm thinking something basic, more like a repair handy tip video.

- I'm sure we have all had the metal end of a screwdriver slip under a pcb that was powered, could be bad.
- Using standoffs as legs on a board to make the work go easier.
- Using a jig to test (microcurrent jig)
- If you have multiple test points use jumpers, connect to a plastic ruler for easy access.
- Jumpers cut to make a solder on version.

In life you lean these things fast on the bench but why not share?

I think it's a great idea! I always felt bad cluttering up the test equipment board with repair posts. Cheers Dave!
