it develops alot of strenght in that crimped area so it might not always be the weakest link, and with cheap batteries the body can also be severely corroded. In fact, the end cap seal might acutally protect the crimped area, so that might be the only place its not corroded
they plate the steel can so it does not rust I think. This is hard to do in the corrosive high pressure environment of a battery
