NFET internal gate zeners?
« on: July 18, 2024, 06:02:16 am »
Hi,
The below STW40N65 FET shows back to back zeners in the gate source.
Can these really be relied upon for VGS overvoltage protection?
After all, it says abs max VGS is +/-25V, so these zeners must be rated above 25V?
In which caase they cant be relied upon to keep Vgs below 25V?

'Perfection' is the enemy of 'perfectly satisfactory'

I would not rely on them. A device shouldn't be run at its absolute maximum ratings. Desin your circuit correctly, so the maximum gate-source voltage isn't exceeded.

Can you see any electrical characteristics for the internal zeners in the datasheet? Zener voltage, current rating, slope resistance?

No?

Then you can't use them can you!

How is it that you can still be asking questions like this?  ::)

These zeners are *only* for protecting the device from ESD at handling out of circuit.

In circuit they should not be used.

These zeners are *only* for protecting the device from ESD at handling out of circuit.
And even then, one should still follow the usual ESD handling precautions.
