Zero ohm resistor wattage
« on: December 27, 2012, 03:47:43 pm »
I want to use a zero ohm SMD resistor, its rated at 0.1W. I'd like to work out the max current but I^2*R isn't going to do it and +-1% tolerance of 0ohms to get the deviation is somewaht mute also.

Unfortunately the data sheet is a generic one for the model line, so not much help there iether.
Any ideas?

Well, what is the real resistance? It ain't zero...

Good question. Haven't ordered it yet and how do you work out the tolerance of 0 ohms

Normally it will be between 50 to 200 milliohms per unit, all it is is a metallised film with a set of ends. Not really a high power unit, use the ratings for the lowest value resistor in the range.

:palm: of course...
Thank you

You are not alone, i have seen many nominal zero ohm links that have been cooked by the current flowing through them.

The real datasheet should mention a maximum current.
This Royalohm datsheet specifies a max working current of 2amps for a 0805 (1/10W) package.
As you can see its handles as a special case; working current instead of voltage and no tolerance specified.
