Where/how to find flexible wires?
« on: January 03, 2014, 01:43:42 am »
I want to  build a few low voltage test pod leads like this one and would like to have though really flexible wires, preferably color coded (e.g. using resistor colors).

http://www.svteq.com/servlet/the-41/HP-POD2-LOGIC-ANALYZER/Detail

I can tell if a wire is flexible when I touch it but am not sure how to specify it when ordering online. For example, Digikey has this parametric search

http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/cables-wires/single-conductor-cables/1638740?k=wire

Any idea where and how to find such wires?

Describe 'flexible'.

Something with lots of fine strands is flexible, how many depends on what you want it to do and how flexible you want it. PVC quality and thickness is another factor.

Not sure I fully understand the question though tbh.

Very fine stranded wire with Silicone insulation = flexible

Like the wire they use inside flat screens from the caps to the screen itself.  That stuff is really flexible.  I have a bit of it that's marked "E204798 AWM 1A 3239 20KV-DC 22AWG 150C FENG TAI ELECTRONIC".  It's silicone insulated and the insulation is fairly thick and it behaves like a piece of silicone tubing.

The Flexi/Silivolt-1V and 2V Line from Multi-Contact are very flexible.

+1 on the silicone fine strand recommendation.  I searched eBay a few months back and ordered 50 ft of Pomona 18AWG in red and black, $20 per 50 ft, and have been very happy with it.  It's part 6733-0 (black) and 6733-2 (red).

I use the exact same Pomona stuff for test leads, excellent quality and price

how about wire that is designed to survive many flexes (like a telephone  cable?)

is silicone the best? what criteria should you look for?
