Am trying to design a circuit that I will use one synchronous decade counter (74192) to control one 7-segment decoder(7447) . This decoder through a 1-4 demultiplexer is used to drive three 7-segments displays individually. The problem am now having is how to hold the voltages at each output of the demultiplexer when switching between outputs

There are 2 tecniques:
1 latch the data/pattern into a buffer.
2. Do the multiplexing so fast that the eye sees all 3 displays, relies on persistence of vision.
For more/better help you will have to show a schematic of your circuit.

Usually the multiplexer drives the 7447 with 4-bit BCD and the 7-segment displays are scanned. This works fine even with 8 displays and the multiplexer only needs to be 4 bits wide instead of 7 or 8 bits wide.
