Replacement for axial oil immersed capacitor
« on: August 11, 2018, 03:19:43 pm »
Dear Friends,

I am searching for axial high pressure oil-immersed paper capacitors marcon cp-c 3a104m 1000v 0.1uf and marcon cp-c 3A474M
1000V 0.47uF. Can someone suggest me the best replacement?

Paper-in-oil capacitors generally last a very long time.  Are you sure they're bad?

What kind of circuit are they being used in?  You should be able to replace them with an appropriately rated plastic film capacitor if those are bad.

If they really need to be paper-in-oil for some reason, some of those Marcon capacitors are still floating around NOS, though I have a feeling United Chemicon doesn't make PIOs any more.  (They bought Marcon years ago, as far as I know...)

Thank you for your reply. Please find my attachment. It's a power supply circuit using for large printing machine.

I would expect a modern film capacitor to work fine here, they are inexpensive enough that it's probably worth trying anyway.

1500V polypropylene capacitors will work there, and you can get them in that value. This probably is only used for mains snubbing, so they will be as effective as the originals. You can, provided you are only using them across 400VAC, use 400VAC rated class X capacitors instead, which will be easier to find.

These same Marcon oil-filled caps failed open in a Leader scope https://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/leader-lbo-580-repair/msg1753268/#msg1753268

For this printer PCB I would replace all of the oil and (four) electrolytic capacitors C11, C12 etc.

Best to use film capacitors to replaceme the 0.47uF 1,000V and 0.1uF 1,000V parts. You can use boxed-packaged parts if you glue them down with silicone and add wires, or just get axial parts.

Example
Kemet C4C 0.47uF 1200VDC/ 500VAC axial.
Digikey 399-13866-ND

Kemet C4C 0.1uF 1200VDC/ 500VAC axial.
Digikey 399-13865-ND
