Control 64 rgb leds for a pov display
« on: August 22, 2013, 01:02:04 pm »
Hi,
i have to build a pov display with two blades with 64 rgb leds on each of them (128 leds total).
I was thinking of using the TLC5947 to control the leds, but it is a little expensive, can someone reccomend a cheap alternative?I need at least 8 bit pwm and current control.
Thanks for the help.

You can get addressable RGB strips with 60led/m which are controllable with a micro. They use a chip that I think is a WS2801, which talks using a 1-wire serial protocol, although there's also an I2C version IIRC.
Don't know what your pov application is, but I've used one of these strips for a simple pov and light painting rig.

The 2801 chip is data+clock and very easy to drive.  The 2811 chip is Manchester and very fussy timing wise.  You can get 5050 RGB LEDs with inbuilt 2811 chip now too.

Think about what PWM frequency you might need for POV.....

Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs
